Backup codes let you sign in when your other 2FA methods are unavailable. Keep them somewhere safe.
What are backup codes?
Backup codes (Recovery Codes) are single-use codes for two-step verification. Plaud generates 6 codes at a time. Each code works once, and using one doesn't change your other two-step verification methods.
How to get backup codes?
- With an authenticator app: codes are generated automatically during setup. Save them when they appear.
- With Email OTP only: go to Settings > Account & security > Security > Two-step verification > Generate backup codes and generate them manually after verifying your identity.
How to regenerate backup codes?
Go to Settings > Account & security > Security > Two-step verification > Generate backup codes and regenerate after verifying your identity and confirming. Regenerating invalidates all previous codes, used or not. Codes are also regenerated automatically whenever you set up an authenticator app, including when you first add one after generating codes with Email OTP only, and when you change your authenticator device.
Keep an eye on your remaining codes
The Two-step verification page shows how many codes remain and warns you when only 2 are left. After you use your last code to sign in, Plaud shows a banner reminding you to regenerate, and your security settings keep a reminder on the backup codes entry until you do.
FAQ about backup codes
I closed the page without saving my codes.
The new codes are already active and your old ones no longer work. Regenerate a fresh set from Settings while you're still signed in. If you're locked out, use another two-step verification method to sign in first.
